October is the month for hearty cooking –warm spices, indulgent soups, savoury dishes that exemplify all the flavours of the season –anything that can warm your insides and chase away the pre-winter blues. If you’re feeling in a rut, try drawing some inspiration from seasonal fruits and vegetables, which you can purchase from your local farmer’s markets before the cold weather chases them away. Farmer’s markets are an excellent way to support growers in your area as well as purchase (often organically grown) produce for better prices than what you can find at the supermarket. Veggies such as pumpkins, squashes, broccoli, spinach, lettuce, and sweet potatoes can be puréed and cooked with a cream or broth base to make a variety of fall soups. Seasonal fruits like apples, pears, and cranberries can be baked with a little bit of butter and brown autumn-foodssugar for a simple dessert that the whole family will enjoy. Fall fruits can also be thrown into the slow cooker with a juice of your choice, though apple is the most popular option, and some cinnamon, nutmeg, and a couple of cloves to make a delicious, spicy cider that’s perfect for sharing at any gathering like Thanksgiving dinner or a Halloween Party.

Beyond simple fruit and veg, October is a perfect month for indulgent foods. Decadent cheeses, like maple brie or cream cheese filled wantons, make deliciously decadent appetizers for any special occasion, although with their comfort-food vibe, you may not want to share. If you aren’t the type to try something too fancy, you can always spruce up a crowd-favourite like mac n’ cheese by adding different kinds of cheese, like fresh parmesan, and bacon bits before baking to make it extra rich.

If you’re looking to accentuate any of the natural fall flavours in your dishes, adding nuts like almonds, cashews, macadamia nuts, or walnuts will compliment most dishes –they can be added to salads, cheese platters, or baked into the cheesy crust on top of casseroles.
